Why we do what we do
H & T Charity Foundation exists to assist families and neighbors in San Jose who are facing hardship, and to give people who want to help a trustworthy place to put time, talent, and money.
We are a small public charity. We do not operate a national franchise and we will not dress up modest work as something it is not. Our focus is local: food and household essentials, youth encouragement, and community connections that keep people from falling through the cracks.
The Foundation is a charitable corporation. The IRS issued a determination letter dated November 30, 2021 recognizing exemption under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Public records show a January 2022 ruling date — typical timing between a letter and the Business Master File.
Principal officer Tin Than has steered the organization from San Jose. The first job was legal: a real EIN, a real exemption, a real annual filing. Programs grow as volunteers and donors step forward. Governance now sits with an eight-member Board of Directors; see Leadership.
We are an independent 501(c)(3) public charity, not a private foundation. Foundation status under IRC Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) means we are organized to receive substantial support from the general public. Donors may deduct contributions under IRC Section 170 to the extent the law allows.
We file Form 990-N (e-Postcard) because annual gross receipts are $50,000 or less. The 2023 e-Postcard confirms the organization was active and not terminated. You can confirm current status on IRS.gov.
We will not invent dollar totals, named beneficiary stories, or celebrity events. When we have a specific drive, we will say so on Stories and invite you to verify.
